Russia reports discovery of Polish-made missile launchers in Chechnya


Russian forces in Chechnya found two launchers for Polish-made ZM Mesko Grom man-portable air-defence missile systems (MANPADS) on 10 October, according to a 21 September report by the Russian news agency Izvestia. One was described as being combat ready, the other as showing signs of having been used


Slovak Republic displays upgraded MRLS
One of the RM-70 Modular multiple rocket launching systems displayed during a military parade in Bratislava on 21 September showed refinements added to the definitive production version. Two launch vehicles – one with the original configuration and one incorporating minor modifications – participated in the parade, which took place to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Slovak Republic Armed Forces


General Dynamics to take over AxleTech
General Dynamics has entered into a definitive agreement with United States private equity firm The Carlyle Group to acquire US-based truck component maker AxleTech International (AxleTech), it was announced on 19 November. The Carlyle Group had bought the business from US investment firm Wynnchurch Capital and other minority shareholders in 2005, for an undisclosed sum 


Samsung Techwin awaits Algerian armoured vehicle decision
South Korean company Samsung Techwin is still hopeful of winning a bid to supply its 6×6 multipurpose wheeled armoured vehicle to Algeria despite an apparent delay in the programme to procure up to 500 units, the Seoul-based company told Jane’s on 18 November. Jane’s understands that the deal to supply the vehicles is worth at least USD200 million and includes candidates from Germany, China, Russia and South Africa





Vietnam bids to be major shipbuilder


Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry aims to become one of the world’s largest over the next decade, alongside its Asian neighbours South Korea, Japan and China, an industry conference has heard. This target will call for subsidiary industries and workers’ skills to be developed, delegates told the conference – in Hai Phong, on Vietnam’s northeast coast – according to an 18 November state news report




Italy receives its first Tranche 2 Typhoon
The Italian Air Force has taken delivery of its first Eurofighter Typhoon Tranche 2 (T2) combat aircraft, the company announced on 18 November. The aircraft – IS020 – was flown to the 4th Wing’s base at Grosseto on 14 November and is the first of 47 T2 aircraft that will be delivered to the air force until 2013
