RUSI report warns on UK naval capability


A leading UK policy study body has warned that the Royal Navy’s ability to meet future threats and challenges is being steadily eroded by continuing reductions in the size of the fleet. The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) paper, ‘British Defence and Security Policy: the Maritime Contribution’, written by Dr Lee Willett, the head of the institute’s maritime studies programme, also contends that rationalisation of support infrastructure could also leave the navy unable to respond to an emergent crisis



Portuguese Type 209PN is quick off the mark with harbour trials


The first of two Type 209PN submarines for the Portuguese Navy was named and launched at ThysssenKrupp Marine Systems’ Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft shipyard (HDW) in Kiel, Germany, on 15 July. Tridente began harbour trials immediately following the ceremony and the 68 m-long boat is due to commence sea trials early in 2009, with delivery to the customer by the end of that year




Sino-Thai co-operation grows with special forces exercise


As part of a steadily expanding programme of military-strategic co-operation, Thailand and China have begun a three-week special forces (SF) combined training exercise, marking the Chinese military’s first experience of extended training on foreign soil. Beginning on 11 July and lasting until the end of the month, the training programme, dubbed ‘Strike 2008’, is being conducted in Chiang Mai province, northern Thailand





Kazakhstan begins final tests of customised MLRS system


The Kazakhstan Ministry of Defence (MoD) has begun final verification tests of the Naiza (‘Spike’) Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) developed for Kazakh land forces by Israeli Military Industries (IMI). The Rocket-based Barrier Fire System has been shown to Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and started live firings on 12 May at the training area of the Otar Guard motor rifle division near Almaty
