Cyprus Leaders to Meet End of March

Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias has announced that he will be meeting Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat between March 17 and 24. He also stated that his plan at present is to press on with the peace effort with a view to reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Speaking at a press conference at the Union of Foreign Correspondents in Athens before departing for Cyprus, President Christofias said that during his meetings in Greece he found total understanding regarding the strategic goals on the Cyprus problem and the current situation.

He added that the aim was to solve the Cyprus problem and that, following last month’s presidential elections on the island, he found a rekindled interest by the international community, noting that the Greek Cypriot side was willing and ready to work towards a settlement and reunification.

President Christofias furthermore expressed hope that the Turkish Cypriot community would show the same will and readiness and that, during his meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader, he would ”try to determine if Mr. Talat is ready to honor his signature” on the UN-brokered agreement of 8 July 2006 to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations leading to a settlement.
