New Zealand will not recognize Kosovo, Premier says

New Zealand will not recognize independent Kosovo, Prime Minister Helen Clark said on Monday. She told a news conference that it was never the government’s position to offer diplomatic recognition in such circumstances. “We neither recognise nor not recognise,” she said. “We are not intending to make a formal statement.”

Noting that it was a divisive issue internationally, Clark expressed hope Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia would not lead to violence.

She said the candidate described as the “more moderate of the two” had won the recent Serbian presidential election, and added, “We would certainly hope that would be reflected in a more sober reaction to what’s happened in Kosovo.”
