Cyprus FM discusses new cooperation opportunities with Moscow

Bilateral relations and the Cyprus question were among the topics discussed during a meeting between Cyprus Foreign Minister Yiorgos Lillikas and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday. Mr. Lillikas paid a two-day working visit to the Russian capital this week.

Speaking to the press, Mr. Lillikas said the talks took place in a climate of friendship and mutual understanding. Both countries, he added, respect international law while in a number of international issues their positions are very close.

Mr. Lillikas also thanked the Russian Government for its continued support to the struggle of the people of Cyprus for reunification of their island. This support is invaluable to us and consider it as an expression of friendship and solidarity, he underlined.

Stressing that he briefed his Russian counterpart on the recent developments on the Cyprus question, Mr. Lillikas asked for Moscow’s assistance, within the framework of the UN Security Council, for the implementation of the July 8 Agreement.

“Only through the implementation of this Agreement can there be new prospects for the solution of the Cyprus question” he stressed. Bilateral relations are developing at all levels, Mr. Lillikas said, adding that Cyprus΄ EU accession creates new perspectives and new opportunities for cooperation.

Mr. Lavrov said Russia supports a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. He stressed that Russia will continue its active participation in the international efforts for a comprehensive solution.

Mr. Lavrov also said that developments of the past years have confirmed two fundamental principles: “That the solution could be reached only in the framework of the UN, according to the relevant Security Council resolutions, and that a settlement is possible only on the basis of voluntary consent of all the Cypriots, Greek and Turkish.”

He then welcomed the steps taken by the Cypriot government towards strengthening confidence between the two communities.

Moreover, Mr. Lavrov expressed his gratitude for Cyprus΄ firm support in the development of strategic and partnership associations between Russia and the EU.
