Britain to pull out of Bosnia

Britain is to withdraw all its 600 troops from Bosnia as part of a European Union agreed draw down of peacekeeping forces, a government official confirmed.

Defense minister Adam Ingram was scheduled to formally announce the plan to the House of Commons at around noon Thursday, the defense ministry said. The ministry declined to comment further.

The European Union said in a statement Wednesday it had agreed to reduce the 6,000-strong EU peace force, to leave around 2,500 EUFOR troops in Bosnia.

A British government official, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to confirm detail ahead on Ingram’s statement, said British troops would be among those withdrawn.

Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Downing Street office said the future of Britain’s peace keeping duties in Bosnia would be confirmed by Ingram.
