European pessimism for Turkey’s entrance to the EU

According to a recent survey by the Bertelsmann foundation in survey only 37% of European citizens believe that Turkey is to join the EU by 2020.

The survey was conducted by a sample of 12,000 people from 13 European statesbetween 01/08/2006 and 04/09/2006.

In UK 58% of the people believe Turkey’s acceptance to the European Union and 53% of the Dutch likewise.

On the other hand in Slovakia only 13% of the population shares this optimism and in Poland and Lithuania the percentage doesn’t rise above 17%. It is intersting to note that countries such as Greece, Cyprus, Sweden and Denmark were not included in the survey and in those states there is traditionally high disaproval of Turkey’s admission.
