Decision still pending on defense and base agreement in Iceland

No decisions have been made as to further negotiations between Iceland and the US regarding the defense agreement and clearing of the US military base near Keflavík. Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde says that he hopes a settlement will be reached in the matter as early as next week. This is reported in the main online media.

An Icelandic delegation met with US authorities in Washington at 10 am yesterday morning for talks on the future of the military base. The meeting was expected to last for the better part of the day and even to continue today, but it ended at 2 pm and the delegation returned to Iceland yesterday evening. The prime minister subsequently released a brief statement saying that all aspects of the matter had been reviewed and that a settlement was expected in the near future.
